Investigate and restructure Bill Evans' Lease
If you watched the video you saw George Stevens
and the other Evans City Council puppets unabashedly give away Torrey Pines
tee times to the Lodge at Torrey Pines. This was done with no notice given
to the public or staff and no notice given at the Golf Advisory Committee
Meetings or the NRC&C meetings either. This sweetheart deal directly
supports the private profiteering of the Torrey Pines Golf Courses to the
tune of almost $26 million with the city receiving only a pittance in
return from the sale of its own tee times. Please write or send an email to City Attorney Aguirre expressing
your concerns.
BELOW IS A SAMPLE LETTER TO THE CITY
ATTORNEY: You can copy and paste the letter into your email or you can use it as
a guide for your own words but please contact the city attorney. Thank you
for your support. Please send us a copy your email to

The San Diego Municipal Golfers
Alliance (SDMGA)
Dear City
Attorney Aguirre:
I have
seen the video of the City Council, apparently in the hip pocket of Bill Evans,
give away Torrey Pines Golf Course tee times to the Lodge at Torrey Pines. Click
on
www.sdmga.org/news.htm to get to the SDMGA web site News Section and then
click on the "City Council Meeting Video". I understand that this giveaway was
done without going through the Golf Advisory Committee, without going through
the NRC&C and without staff even knowing about it. You have asked for a review
of City Leases. I strongly request that the city investigate and restructure the
entire Evans’ sweetheart lease. When you watch this video, you can clearly see
that the City was not aggressively representing the taxpayers’ interests. In
fact, the City’s “negotiators” made those who represented the original owners of
Manhattan Island look like hard line negotiators when they settled for 24
blankets and a pocket full of beads. Since Evans’ sweetheart lease was
negotiated, much has changed. The obtaining of the U.S. Open is a huge windfall
for the Lodge at Torrey Pines. They will be getting literally millions of
dollars of free publicity for at least a year leading up to the Open and then
four days of international television coverage when the Open is actually held.
Isn’t the property worth dramatically more? Isn’t the City entitled to an
adjustment of the lease to reflect this windfall? Shouldn’t Evans’ exclusive
right to provide food and beverage service be reconsidered? Shouldn’t the Golf
Enterprise Fund benefit from Mr. Evans’ good fortune instead of soaking local
golfers with higher fees?
Respectfully,
